DALY BEAUTY: Smells Expensive But Isn't

Smells Expensive But Isn't

I love my little drugstore cheapie secrets. You'd be amazed at the beauty finds that can be had for a steal. This week's uncharacteristically warm weather had me reaching for two perfumes that most of my friends would be shocked to know I wear. They are cheap and cheerful drugstore perfumes, although they are made somewhat exotic by not being available in Canada (or at least Ontario) so I have taken road trips to the booming American metropolis of Ogdensburg to buy these beauties. At Walmart. Ahem. Lest you fear I have lost my senses, I will direct you to the masthead of the blog where you can feast your eyes on my vintage Chanel Bois des Iles. Which I still love and wear. Moving on to my pretty Coty perfumes....

Sand & Sable: If you like tropical florals you really should give this a try. It is a lush tuberose, gardenia, jasmine and lilac scent with some sweet fruity peachy coconut-y notes. It has a lot in common with Piguet's Fracas but frankly, I like it better and find it more wearable. It is sweeter and less stringently eye watering. Apologies to Fracas lovers! I've tried...really I have. The dry down of Sand & Sable is where you will find the lilac, after the tropical florals float away. It is a big sillage monster, so apply sparingly. I like to dab this one to keep it close to the skin. Where the "Sable" reference comes from is a mystery to me. Especially given the ad copy above, "Who needs the sable?". Perhaps it makes it sound fancy. I have used this on my light bulbs as well- in the middle of winter it turns your house into a beachy garden and I just love it. It reminds me of the 80s...in a good way. Just don't judge a perfume by it's bottle.

Lady Stetson: It was the 4 Star review in The Guide that made me revisit this one, with it's unbelievable comparisons to the classic Chanel No22, which I adore. I see that similarity for sure, in the fizzy aldehydes, but Lady Stetson is fruitier, reminding of another scent that reminds me of Chanel No22, Santa Maria Melograno.  An airy, dusty, powdery fruity (peach?) note that dries down to a soapy incense note. It is such an unusual composition for a drugstore perfume, and I'm kind of amazed every time I wear it. It is odd, and definitely won't appeal to everyone, but if you are intrigued by my description, you should search it out and give it a try. As mainstream as it is, I have never smelled it on anyone, perhaps due to it's import status in Canada. So it's unique, pretty and complex. Ignore the bottle here too please, it belies the goodness within. "It's how the west was won"....don't you just love 80s perfume ads?

My daughter Emilie was wearing Yardley Lily of The Valley the other day and honestly, I could not identify it as cheap at all. It just smell pretty. Do you have any cheap and cheerful perfume faves? Share! I love these tips....

I've been wanting to try that Sand and Sable since March and Musette blogged about it over at the Posse. But like you, I live in Canada.

My fave cheap and cheerful scent would be the bottle of Queen by Queen Latifah I bought from the $20 shelf at Shopper's Drug Mart. Boozy and full of incense, patchouli and vanilla, it's got the longevity of plutonium.

I'd love to try Lady Stetson after reading LT's review. Now I can add Sand and Sable to my list. And thanks to Dionne, also Queen by Queen Latifah.
I have to say, I'm not a price snob, or a label snob either nowadays. It's all about the good smells. :)
These days a lot of classic perfumes can be had for pennies - I love Arden's Blue Grass in the summer, Spiced Green Tea as a relaxing spritz (I swear it's a dupe of Clarins Eau Resourcante, which is instant mellowness for me), Caldey Island Lavender is a tenner for 28mls, artisan perfumers like Ava Luxe charge a pittance compared to how good their perfumes are and the talent and imagination that goes into them. I think there's no need to spend a fortune to smell incredible.

As for the drugstore faves, well... SJP Lovely is an unbeatable Mum-on-the-run scent and I love the musk spin-off from that, Twilight. Halle by Ms Berry is a nice everyday scent too. I've picked up all of those for cheap cheap in gift sets. And Yardley? They are ace. I had a bottle of their Sandalwood edt that was killer. I hear great things about their Iris now. Finally, Eau de Cologne. I get a super cheap one in France when I can and I love it in hot weather.

I love finding a bargain and there are so many great scents that can be found for under $30, especially at the discounters and online. I have been exploring some notes and while sampling some iris options, I found both Ferre and Crabtree and Evelyn's iris. The former reminds me of FM Iris Poudre and the later is just plain pretty. I also recently bought a bottle of Rochas Man for $28USD and I love it. This reminds me of Bond no 9's New Haarlem. I love spritzing this on my pillow at bedtime.

I LOVE this blog post! I am SOOO trying Lady Stetson now. Queen is in my arsenal already, and I love Jessica Simpson's Fancy Nights, which they're now giving you $100 just to take it from the store. Also Coty's L'Aimant cologne is delicious and DIRT CHEAP.
Can I get Sand & Sable from somewhere that delivers to Australia?
Portia xx

Hi, Jane! Quartz by Molyneux is a warm weather standby for me and a terrific bargain. It bears a resemblance to Cristalle (which I'm pretty sure was deliberate given its name and the fact that it was released not long after) and I detect similarities to Le Parfum de Therese, as well. Notes of white flowers, peach, aldehydes and citrus with a drydown of light woods and amber. You can find it online for the rock-bottom (pun intended) price of less than $30 for 3.3 ounces.

Anonymous - the Ferre de Ferre really IS a sister of FM's Iris Poudre - they were both created by the same man, Pierre Bourdon. He created Iris Poudre for FM and a few years later tweaked it a bit and created Ferre de Ferre.

I always forget that Sand and Sable is not a beachy, calone plus animalic as the name could suggest. The ad is terrific! It's as if the ad designers were grappling to "handle" the name somehow. And also "sable" means sand in French...so the name at first makes me think : sand and more sand. (And you are right, it is a sillage monster. Too much for me!)

Very interesting about Ferre de Ferre and Iris poudre.

I love S & S, have worn it since the 80's. But it smells much nicer dabbed than sprayed. It does bring back lovely memories and I always keep a bottle around when SF is fogged in.

Wordbird, I hope you get a chance to try them! Lady Stetson is a real surprise. I adore Blue Grass, and the cream deo is always in my cabinet. Thank you for reminding me about Caldey Island Lavender! I read LTs review again & it needs to be in my collection! Yardley Sandalwood sounds divine! Is it still around, I wonder?

Portia I would try Amazon.com for Sand & Sable, sadly I am not sure on individual etailers shipping policies. Coty L'Aimant? It's on my list now! Sounds lovely!

Cheryl you should win a prize for that comment! OF COURSE IT MEANS SAND! I'm semi bilingual and my daughters kindly pointed out there is no excuse for me not knowing this! I laughed out loud- thank you so much for your wonderful comment xo

Elizabeth- its amazing the difference a little dab vs a spritz can make! It's like parfum strength, honestly they could dilute this one a ton and it would still be lovely!

I've heard great things about Lady Stetson, and it's only about $20 at Walmart.

Juicy Couture is a good one too, as is Tocade.

Glad I made you laugh! :)

Sand and Sable (fur) or Sand and Sable (sand) are equally odd choices for a perfume name!
